Smartcool Signs Distribution Agreement With Largest Chiller Service Specialist in the Middle East December, 2009

SMARTCOOL
Vancouver, B.C
. – Smartcool Systems Inc. (TSXV: SSC) is pleased to report that the company has signed an exclusive agreement with U.S. Chiller Services to distribute Smartcool’s Energy Savings Module™ (ESM™) in the U.A.E. and Bahrain. U.S. Chiller Services will also market Smartcool’s ECO3™ on a non-exclusive basis. In addition to offices in Dubai, U.A.E. and Manama in the Kingdom of Bahrain, U.S. Chiller Services also have locations in California and Florida.

As part of their due diligence process, U.S. Chillers installed the Energy Savings Module™ (ESM™) on a large tonnage Centrifugal chiller at a location, managed by the Palm District Cooling Company, situated in Dubai. The test was initiated in July 2009 and required 14 days of operation where readings were taken prior to activation of Smartcool’s ESM™. Readings were then taken for 14 days with the ESM™ activated and then a further 14 days of readings were taken with the ESM™ on and off on alternate days. The results from the testing period indicated energy savings of 13.16% when comparing the 14 days on and off period and 16.63% energy savings for the alternate day period. On average, the ESM™ provided savings of 2,925 kWh per day, an average savings of 14.89%. This equates to approximately US$95,000 per annum on this single chiller application.

“The test was conducted throughout real operational conditions during 42 days under the peak Dubai summer period and provided very impressive results,” stated Dan Mizesko, Managing Partner of US Chiller Services. “Not only did the ESM™ save substantial kWh input power to the chiller, it was also able to slightly improve the chiller’s kW per ton efficiency. We were also able to confirm that the technology can be integrated to multiple chillers allowing chillers to share the common load equally and save energy equally. Our firm conclusion is the Smartcool technology is a powerful energy saving technology on single or multiple chiller installations.”

“We are very pleased to be working with U.S. Chiller Services, the largest chiller service specialist in the Middle East,” added George Burnes, President and CEO of Smartcool Systems Inc. “U.S. Chiller has an award winning reputation and we feel very comfortable that our energy savings technology will be represented to a wide array of clients in a very important market place for our company. The test has only endorsed what we at Smartcool already know, that we have a technology that can provide energy reduction resulting in significant cost savings.”

US Chillers are the largest Chiller service specialist organization in the Middle East with a portfolio of over 350,000 tons of district cooling chillers, and over 800,000 tons of total liquid chillers under service agreements. The company operates under a joint venture with Al Shirawi Electrical & Mechanical Engineering in the United Arab Emirates.

Smartcool Systems have chosen US Chillers as an independent validation party to undertake testing and analysis of its technology on the basis of its impeccable reputation within the industry from both a maintenance, as well as validation standpoint. Cold forming of dished heads taken to a new level - Arabian Oasis Industries LLC August, 2009
AOI
3200 I/Dia x 75mm Nom SS

Semi Ellipsoidal Head

AOI is at the forefront of dished head manufacture by cold forming and following the introduction of its new flanging machine
has formed the world’s first 75mm one piece dished head in the cold condition.

The conventional method of cold pressing the dished portion followed by cold flanging the corner radius and straight flange section is well known for thicknesses of up to 40mm however, AOI has extended the range for this type of forming to a new level giving vessel manufacturers a range of infinitely variable diameters without the need for costly tooling. AOI’s recent investment in a state of the art flanging machine for this purpose has proved a huge success. With this development without doubt AOI is the premier dished head manufacturer in the Gulf.

Sugathan, General Manager, explains:

“Only a few years ago the cold forming of anything over 40mm was considered impossible and AOI increased that to 50mm, recently, after much research into forming techniques and the use of special lubricants we decided that it was possible to form such high thicknesses. Extensive testing of the material after forming and subsequent (in house) heat treatment has revealed that there are no adverse effects. This method of forming gives more accurate diameters and less ovality than the previously used method of hot forming in a press making it easier for manufacturers to fabricate their vessels. We have now formed many higher thickness heads in a variety of materials. Actually the forming of this particular head went without any complications much as we had predicted and we are looking forward to forming many more”

Double celebration for Global Shipping & Logistics March, 2009

Double celebration for GSL Global Shipping & Logistics (GSL), the Dubai-based logistics service provider, is enjoying a fruitful start to the year after the company qualified for four ISO standards, considerably more than the number required by national regulations.

The standards won by GSL include the quality management system (QMS), the environmental management system (EMS), the occupational health and safety management system (OHSAS) and the hazard analysis and critical control point certificate.

“We wanted to go for the more advanced standards as well, and from what we understand, hardly any of the other regional 3PLs have all four of these standards, so I really rate this as one of our great recent achievements,” said Arun Kumar, IT manager for GSL, who was speaking to arabiansupplychain.com.

In addition, GSL has also completed the construction of two further distribution centres, to add to its two current facilities in Dubai Investment Park. Altogether, the firm will have two temperature-controlled and two cold storage units, and the recent move now more than doubles GSL’s existing capacity.

“Everything has been built and we should be commissioning the two centres in April,” concluded Kumar.

IT DepartmentIn what could be termed as the largest consolidation effort in the history of the company, the diversified Al Shirawi Group has initiated an enterprise wide application and infrastructure centralisation exercise that is aimed at leaving legacy behind.

With over 30 diversified companies structured across eight business units under its umbrella, the Al Shirawi Group found itself at cross roads. “Growth was excellent. The group had diversified interests from manufacturing, trading, plastic, printing, global shipping to logistics and transportation, but each company was operating within its own island of systems. The infrastructure was also sagging. If we had to keep up with the pace of growth, change had to be initiated,” says MN Chaturvedi, Director of IT at Al Shirawi Group of Companies.

“Having run the business on Informix based systems for over 10 years we found that we needed applications and systems that could enable management to get a group picture. The first step therefore was to head towards a major ERP initiative,” Chaturvedi adds. In line with this plan, the company took the decision to implement the Oracle e-Business Suite based on HP servers to integrate the different lines of activity including manufacturing, projects and accounts at the group level. “We decided to invest in one central system that could integrate various aspects and then integrate best of breed, vertical, domain specific applications that some of our business interests would need,” he adds. With the application centralisation underway, the next step was to ensure that an infrastructure that could cope with growth was put in place. Read the complete story [PDF]

The Al Shirawi Group in the UAE is in an enviable position June, 2008

The board had a feeling that our systems were not able to deliver on the business’s requirements. The Al Shirawi Group in the UAE is in an enviable position – it found itself needing a new ERP system, to cope with the dramatic growth its divisions were seeing.

In the Middle East’s booming economies, more and more companies are being forced to scale their systems to meet new business requirements, and Al Shirawi Group’s eight companies – each with several business units – is a good exemplar.

“There is a very wide variety of business types across the companies, a very broad spectrum of industries,” says M Chaturvedi, director of IT for Al Shirawi. “These industries consist of manufacturing, trading, projects, air conditioning.”

He says the impetus for the ERP project came from the group’s board of directors. They felt the group needed a more cohesive approach to data and information from its companies – the current systems deliver company data in a rather different format to that desired by the directors.

“The board of directors wanted to consolidate everything on one system,” explains Chaturvedi. “They had a feeling that the business was growing, and our systems were not able to deliver on the business’s increasing requirements. Read the complete story

Hotels in old town waterproofing March, 2008

They say it never rains but it pours. That's certainly true of Dubai, and Emaar called on the skills of the team at Al Shirawi Contracting to safeguard the flagship Qamardeen and Al Manzil Hotels. The waterproofing works for these properties presented a particular challenge, not from above, but from below, thanks to the proximity of the Business Bay extension of Dubai Creek and the extensive construction going on in the Burj Dubai/ Downtown development area. One of the Old Town’s features is the absence of traffic – all cars are parked underground, and this is equally true of the parking provision at the hotels. In fact, some 25,000m2 of space for 500 cars is found at Qamardeen and a similar provision at Al Manzil, demanding meticulous waterproofing and extremely high quality work. The whole area was sealed with Bitumat Premierflex 4000 using an injection hose system to eliminate the possibility of any leakage at any stage. Above ground, a matching 25,000 square metres of roof was sealed using Bitumat Polyflex, and heavy rains experienced during the early stages of the works proved the quality of the installation! Guests staying at Qamardeen and Al Manzil are ensured of a comfortable, relaxing, and above all, dry stay during their visit
EFG Hermes Bank on Al Shirawi quality February, 2008

When prestige financial house EFG Hermes decided to set up an operation in Dubai, they chose DIFC for their office. The only problem was, no suitable office was available for their move in two months time. Solution? Pick up the phone to Al Shirawi. Working very closely with Project Managers M A C E, Ani Chacko and the team from Al Shirawi Contracting Co LLC undertook the whole thing as a complete turn-key project, supplying and installing all flooring, partitions, ceilings, woodwork and glass paneling. A particular feature of this project is the very sleek profiles of the work – take a look at the almost invisible joints between the glass panels, achieved by specifying and unusually slim profile for the edges. Tricky, but the result was definitely worth it! The team also had to work very closely with the MEP agency to ensure that services and finishes were installed in a coordinated fashion, and the whole job was completed and handed over successfully within the original 60 days window. Such was the success of the job and the quality of the finishes achieved that the team went on to win the contract for Kuwait-based real estate investors Grand International’s prestigious new head office in EMAAR Business Park, opposite DIC. Eye glass project sees great results February, 2008

Eye TestingWhat do you notice when you look at the buses carrying construction workers around the streets of Dubai? Jamie Phares noticed that virtually none of the workers wore eye glasses. Jamie raised the subject with her friend, Navin Valrani, and asked him why this was. Do construction workers have unusually good eyesight? Or was there some other reason? This conversation laid the foundations for the Eye Glass Project, which was to become a major charitable initiative driven by Al Shirawi Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Jamie Phares happens to work with Johnson & Johnson, one of the world’s leading sight specialists, supplying vision correction technology to opticians throughout the region. Navin Valrani was impressed with her concerns, and recognized immediately that proper eye care and correct vision are vital for the welfare of all company employees. The problem was that many workers did not have access to qualified and professional eye care. So, a company-wide initiative was implemented to ensure that Eye Clinicall workers had access to proper sight testing and vision correction. The company teamed up with Al Jaber Optical to offer all workers free eye testing, and also arranged with Johnson & Johnson to provide spectacles to those who needed them at a heavily

subsidized rate. It began with a Notice posted in April 2006 inviting workers to come for a free eye test. That first notice brought 69 enquiries, and resulted in 69 pairs of spectacles being issued! Subsequent rounds have seen a further 200 applicants, of which 173 now have glasses and better vision. The program was an immediate success, and so far more than 250 workers have been enabled to see properly, many of them for the first time! The program is ongoing, and when every member of current workforce has taken up the opportunity, it will be offered to all new recruits as well. Employee welfare is a one of the cornerstones of all Al Shirawi group businesses, and the company’s initiative was prominently featured in 7Days.
Al Shirawi Contracting Company's New Offices September, 2007

Drivers on the Al Khail road have a new landmark in the shape of the prominent new head office for the Al Shirawi Contracting Company, in Al Quoz. Naturally, it’s blue. But it is also much more than a prestige office; it’s a showcase for all that the Al Shirawi Group can do. The building itself is new, and this created the opportunity to implement the latest technology– it is fully ‘wired’ for easy networking, uses highly efficient equipment to reduce the environmental impact, and showcases the skills of every part of the Al Shirawi team. The fitout was carried out by Al Shirawi, using skills and materials sourced from other group companies like VisionWood International, who provided the carpentry, and Al Shirawi Electrical & Mechanical Engineering, who provided the air conditioning. Visitors can see for themselves the quality of the materials and the level of workmanship that the company can achieve. Also, the clean, modern design creates an ideal working environment. Modern, efficient, low impact, and high quality: it is an office that accurately reflects the skill, vision, and integrity of the company it houses. ASCCO Office
Displaying its knowledge June, 2006

Knowledge VillageAl Shirawi Contracting's relationship with Dubai Knowledge Village has been an ongoing success story for the past five years.

After completing the waterproofing for Knowledge Village phases I & II in Dubai Internet City, and phase I in Academic City, Al Shirawi Contracting has now completed waterproofing the substructure, wet area and roof in phase II of Academic City.

The total project area involved around 23,000 m2 of substructure, 8,000 m2 of roof and 1,500 m2 of wet area.

Bitumat Premierflex 2000 [5mm] was used for the substructure and roof, while the wet area was completed using liquid-applied polyurethane Rooftex from Conren in the UK. The work was completed on time and to the satisfaction of the main contractor, consultant and the client.

Al Shirawi is now engaged in waterproofing for the third phase of Knowledge Village in Academic City, where work has already started on substructure waterproofing.

"We are thankful and proud to be associated with Al Basti and Muktha, Dar Consultant and Tecom on this project and thank them for having confidence in Al Shirawi Contracting's capabilities," said S. Sekhar, General Manager of the Waterproofing Division.

Celebrating a Birthday every month January, 2006

What started as a surprise birthday party for the boss has turned into a monthly celebration for the staff at Al Shirawi. Each month, the entire company is invited to a party to celebrate with the staff who have had a birthday that month. "The idea came about in July when we held a surprise party for Navin Valrani, our Executive Director", said Human Resources Manager Ashfaq Kazi.

"Staff don't' usually get an opportunity to meet each other outside the scope of their official work. We decided it would be a nice idea to celebrate the birthdays that take place each month and invite everyone to join the fun."

Each month, Ashfaq sends out an email, inviting staff to meet in the company dining room on the last Wednesday or Thursday of the month. The party starts an hour before the office closes, so the impact on work is minimal.

"We decorate the dining room and provide a cake that is cut by the birthday celebrants, who also receive a card, flowers, and a gift voucher. We provide refreshments and snacks for everyone else," said Ashfaq. "Everyone comes, including the department managers and Mr. Navin.”

"The gatherings are a great opportunity for staff from all eight companies to meet each other in an informal setting, as well as to meet the senior managers."

Police HQ is a shining example for Al Shirawi November, 2005

Police HQFebruary's downpours failed to put a dampener on proceedings at Dubai Police head quarters - thanks to Al Shirawi Contracting's waterproofing work.

Al Shirawi recently completed waterproof work on the basement, wet areas and roof for the Dubai Police Headquarters near Ghusais.

And when the heavy downpours came towards the end of February, officials at Al Shirawi sat back confident the work would withstand the deluge - and it did. And they say it will provide the same protection for the next 10 years.

This landmark contract for Al Shirawi came hard on the heels of work carried out at Muraqabat Police Station, The Barrack building at the Police Training College and the Muraqabat Administration building and workshop complex at Al Twar.

But the Dubai Headquarters contract was by far the biggest, containing 990 piles of different dia and about 25,000 square metres of substructure which covered 11,000 square metres of roof as well as wet areas and planters.

Only the highest quality materials were used. Bitumat Premierflex 4000 was used for the substructure, Bitumat Polyflex for the roof and wet areas and Anti-root membranes for the planters.

In addition, the injection hose system was used as an added precaution at each stage, to avoid any possible leakages.

The work was carried out at various stages over an 18-month period. The consultant on the job, Arenco and main contractor, Al Shafar General Contracting, were more than satisfied with the work of Al Shirawi Contracting.

S. Sekhar, General Manager, said: "We are sure the towering structure will definitely be one of the landmark buildings in Dubai and will stand as testimony for Al Shirawi's expertise for many years to come."

Big screen work earns big reputation December, 2005

Cinema

In yet another contracting coup, Al Shirawi Contracting has completed interior work in the 14 screen cinema complex at the Mall of the Emirates.
"Our reputation as cinema specialists is well and truly taking hold," said Raj Pal Saran, the General Manager, Interiors Division, of Al Shirawi Contracting. "Having successfully carried out similar work in the Ibn Battuta cinemas, Al Tayer Stocks were happy to award us this latest contract."

Al Shirawi's piece de resistance in the MOE complex was to supply and install a metal concourse [tunnel] at the entrance. "This was a first for us," explained Raj, "and involved installing a series of powder coated perforated aluminium panels, each measuring 2400 by 600mm, to create a semi-circular walk-way."

Al Shirawi also installed all 14 cinema ceilings with double layered acoustic tiles set on isolation mounts, as well as other ceiling and decor work in the foyer and lobby. "We also did a lot of the ceiling and wall cladding in the Magic Planet activity area," added Raj.

Dragon Mart waterproofed and open for business November, 2005

Police HQDragon Mart, the largest trading facility for Chinese products outside of China, has opened its doors in Dubai and Al Shirawi played a key role in ensuring the construction of the massive structure was a success. Al Shirawi waterproofed 51000 m2 of the 1.2 kilometer long Dragon Mart, including the impressive main entrance known as the Dragon Mouth.

The massive trading hub is located at Nakheel's International City in the Al Warsan area. Over a three-month period Al Shirawi worked five foam concrete machines around the clock, the result being that the project was completed and handed over one month ahead of schedule. The 24,000 m2 Dragon Mouth was completed in just one month. At any given time there were 45 laborers, two foremen and one full-time engineer on site.

S. Sekhar, General Manager, explained that the Dragon Mart is the second largest steel structure in the UAE, after the Dubai International Airport. It is jointly promoted by Nakheel and Chinamex Middle East Investment and Trade Promotion Centre. The consultants for Al Shirawi's work were Shadid Engineering Consultants and the main contractor was Al Shafar Transport & Contracting.

"We are very proud to have worked with Nakheel and to be associated with this project," Sekhar said. "Having seen the work we carried out at the Dragon Mart, Al Shafar Transport awarded us with a similarly valued contract for 27 buildings in the International City.

A sound result for Ibn Battuta cinemas June, 2005

Walls and ceilings for no less than 20 Grand Cinemas theatres and one IMax 3D cinema were fitted by Al Shirawi Interiors Division at the Ibn Battuta Mall. Despite the scale of the contract, carried out on behalf of Al Tayer Stocks, the job was successfully completed within the three-month deadline.

"Although we've fitted out cinemas before, this was one of the biggest jobs we've ever done," said Raj Pal Saran, General Manager, Interiors Division, adding that the team was responsible for fitting susspended ceilings and dry walls, as well as the installation of a decorative ceiling in the cinema foyer.
All the walls around and between the 21 cinemas had to be clad in a special, fire-retardant wall system. Four layers of gypsum board on each side of the walls resulted in a thickness of 500mm, each reaching a height of 10-12 meters. Ceilings were also fitted with a special acoustic ceiling gypsum board, while a custom suspension system on isolation mounts provided shock absorption to cushion the vibrations from the cinema sound system. Below the ceiling, 600mm square acoustic tiles were fitted.

"Many of the materials we used had to be specially sourced," said Raj. "The walls and ceilings came from an Australian company, Boral Middle East, who specialise in gypsum board walls. The ceiling tiles and special black acoustic cladding behind the screens came from Rockfon in Denmark.

Once installation was complete, acoustic testing was successfully carried out to ensure that each theatre adhered to strict sound-level criteria. "Through this and other cinema projects we have completed, it is fair to say that we are now cinema specialists," said Raj.

"Malls are the new culture in Dubai, and each one will have cinemas. Companies looking for specialist outfitters need look no further than Al Shirawi. By working together, Al Tayer Stocks, the customer that contracted us to do the job, Nakheel, and the Turner project managers, were able to complete the job successfully and on time. The team did a great job, considering we also had to synchronize our work with all the other agencies who were also working on the cinemas, including the electromechanical and soft furnishing contractors."

Office fit out done in record time June, 2005

Staff at the Belhoul Group's corporate offices in Dubai are now enjoying their plush new offices, thanks to the turnkey fit out project which Al Shirawi finished in record time. In just 75 days Al Shirawi carried out complete interior works on three floors of the building, which is located in Garhoud. The job involved the installation of partitions, ceilings, air conditioners, floorings, fire safety systems, and electrics.

The project also involved joinery and minor civil works. Raj Pal Saran, the General Manager of the Al Shirawi Contracting Interior Division, announced that both Belhoul and the consultant / designer Arki Design Dubai, are very happy with the overall result.

He added that Ani Chacko, Assistant Manager of Sales and planning, and Lakshman Kumar, the Site Engineer, played a crucial role in the coordination and successful execution of the project.

Cinema
A highlight of the job was constructing the curved glass wall. It was the first time Al Shirawi had installed a wall of this type.
Ceilings installed at Arabian Ranches December, 2004

Cinema

Ceilings are now in place at almost 315 villas in the Arabian Ranches, and residents have begun to move in. Over a period of 13 months Al Shirawi installed suspended ceilings in all of the villas in the Arabian Ranches, an Emaar property development. The scope of the work included gypsum board and calcium silicate ceilings, along with bulk heads and some decorative cladding work around the fire places.
As Raj Pal Saran, General Manager of the Interiors Division, explained, the vast scale of the Arabian Ranches posed a number of challenges: "The Arabian Ranches is set in a sprawling area and the distances between the villas were the biggest challenge. Sometimes work was being done on villas that were up to two kilometers apart," Raj said. "Coordination between sites, supervising work, and getting the materials out were difficult challenges. However, the team from Al Shirawi overcame these difficulties to complete the job on time. Intricate coordination was also required with the other subcontractors working onsite."

At the project's peak period, Al Shirawi had over 170 people working at the site. "We would like to thank our client Al Basti and Mukhta for giving us the chance to work on such a prestigious project," Raj added. "Particular mention must go to Al Basti and Muktha's Assistant General Manager, M.D. Narayan, who did an excellent job of handling this project." The project architect for the job was M/S SPP, Dubai.

Waterproofing winner November, 2003

Knowledge Village"Success breeds success" is an oft-repeated quote, but Al Shirawi's waterproofing unit proved it beyond a shadow of doubt. The Knowledge Village is being seen as one of the biggest success stories since Al Shirawi started its waterproofing activities in the 1980s.

Project details: S.Sekhar, Contracts Manager, explained: "The project involved an area of 35,000m2 and 2100 pile-head treatments".The first phase involved waterproofing the sub-structure.The workers are now waterproofing the roof.

Sekhar firmly believes that Al Shirawi landed the waterproofing contract because it was best suited in terms of capability, mobilisation of manpower and material, and finance.

Execution: Despite all odd-peak summer, gas torches,on-site catering, the team completed the project ahead of schedule by working day and night, even on Fridays.Sekhar said,"Oncompletion of the first phase, the workers felt a sense of pride and achievement. They are eager to get more such projects."

Both Al Basti & Mukhta and Dar Consult, the main contractor and consultants respectively, were thoroughly impressed with Al Shirawi's work. "They did a perfect job and we have no complaints," confirms Bassam Adi, Project Manager at Dar Consult. "We have specified Al Shirawi for three big forthcoming projects."

Sekhar feels that "the Knowledge Village will be a forerunner for many jobs in the future."

Race against time March, 2002

Police HQ

AL SHIRAWI Contracting was awarded the sub-contract waterproofing works for the prestigious Dubai Media City second phase, against stiff competition and under a near-impossible programme schedule.

The high profile job was also a high specific- ation project using a waterproofing membrane specially manufactured by Bitumat of Saudi Arabia.

"We only came to know quite how tight the schedule was after we mobilised at the site," explained S Sekhar, Contracts Manager. "Even the main contractor, Belhasa Engineering Contracting co, was doubtful of any applicator to meet the programme schedule, but we were confident it was possible."

The team finished the job exactly on time for the contract, but had to pullout all the stops to do so. "With just two months to complete 10,000 square meters of sub-structure waterproofing over five buildings, we had to work around the clock, with up to 50 people on site at any time," explained Sekhar.

The 24 hour work, in shift teams was monitored every three hours, with labour resources mobilised from all possible sources to meet the deadline.

Sekhar is quick to praise the work and dedication of his teams in completing the job on time.

"There were outstanding contributions from Rajput, Azeem, Nair, Firoz and Pandey in supervising to ensure that the work was to the highest standard, despite the long hours and necessary speed. It was also an extraordinary effort from all the workers as the job took place during the height of the summer, in the peak temperatures, and the men were working with torches and gas."

Double success in Al Warqaa February, 2002

Police HQTwo divisions of Al Shirawi Contracting were involved in a large contract for Union Properties, on a group of 271 double-storey villas being built at Al Warqaa.

The interiors division was involved in the project from the start. Raj Pal Saran, General Manager, Interiors explained: "This was not just an important job for a major client, but a
form of pre-qualification for future work.

"The completion period was one year and we are proud to say that we finished bang on target, installing various types of ceilings in the villas, including gypsum board, tiles and external ceilings."

The waterproofing division undertook a separate contract at the villas, but came in late and at short notice.

Al Basti and Mukhta appointed Al Shirawi to turn the job around. S Sekhar, Contracts Manager for the Waterproofing division, explained "We had less time than was stipulated in the original bid, so we had to plan our resources very carefully. However, mobilisation was swift and we finished the waterproofing works to Al Basti and Mukhta's satisfaction within the contract deadline of just four months."

The efficiency of the team's performance gained great appreciation from Al Basti and Muktha, and has already led to further work.

Speed & professional approach earn kudos September, 2000

NEW contracts could soon be in the pipeline following the successful completion of the Al Nahda shopping complex in Sharjah.

The speed and professionalism of Al Shirawi's waterproofing division resulted in a letter of praise from the site manager of Bin Laden, the main contractor working on the Sharjah complex.

This is a real accolade for the division and one which should help to boost Al Shirawi's business profile.

In charge of the project was contracts manager, S. Sekhar, who commented: "Although these sort of letters are occasionally given, it's quite unusual. It shows that Bin Laden was really satisfied with our work and will now recommend us to other companies."

Rising to the challenge February, 2000

Al Nahda Shopping Complex constructionThe massive Al Nahda shopping complex in Sharjah proved a challange for the Al Shirawi waterproofing division. In just two and a half months, the team of more than 50 had to apply more than 45,000 square meters of bitumen membrane to vertical and horizontal areas of the substructure.

It was a case of results speaking louder than words, as Civil Engineering Contracts Manager S Sekhar describes it. Initially main contractor Bin Laden awarded Al Shirawi part of the job - a major breakthrough for Al Shirawi which was working to crack into a competitive market - and the speed and results they achieved in three weeks were enough to secure the entire project.

Al Nahda Shopping Complex constructionThe work was completed in the period of mid-December through February, during which time the team was tested to its limits. Sekhar said: "They had to work 16 hours a day, seven days a week to meet the shedule. The decition of our staff, was remarkable."

On the back of this success, the waterproofing division is optimistic of landing more major projects in the UAE.

More than 20 years old, the waterproofing division has been active in the UAE market since the mid 1980s. Growth has been "phenomenal," says Sekhar, virtually doubling every year since 1996.

Party in the park January, 2000

Party

Staff from around the got together in December 2003 for a relaxing picnic at Dubai's Safa Park.

Over 100 people attended. Games were played and prizes given out to the
winners, following which everybody enjoyed a buffet lunch.

"This was a great opportunity for staff, managers and senior management to come together and promote team work in a fun and relaxing way," said V. Ravikumar, Business Development Manager, Al Shirawi.

The get-together was such a success that the next one is already being planned.

Home sweet home in Hatta January, 2000

HattaDubai Municipality employees can rest a little easier now thanks to electrical and plumbing work Al Shirawi completed in 62 new government villas in Hatta. The villas were completed late last year and Al Shirawi carried out its work over a 12 month period. All of the villas are two are two stories and have two, four or five bedrooms.

"This was a rewarding project we're very pleased to have worked with the main contractor Al Ashram Contracting Company", said S. Sekhar, General Manager, Al Shirawi Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.

Working on the large number of villas was challenging but ultimately very satisfying. It's always great to see a job come to fruition, especially after a year's hard work and dedication. Sekhar added that Al Shirawi hopes to work on further projects in the Hatta area as it continues to grow.

Customer service guaranteed January, 2000

PoojaAl Shirawi Electrical and Mechanical Engineering has enhanced its commitment to customer satisfaction for its After Sales Service business with the recent creation of a customer service department. Managed by Pooja Rangwani, the customer service desk was established in December 2003 and monitors and responds to all customer feedback received for its service business be it positive or negative. Feedback is passed directly to the Executive Director, Which ensures all customer comments are heard at the top level of the company and acted upon immediately.

"Customers are free to tell me any small details," Pooja explained.

"Through the Customer Service Desk we can know how satisfied our customers really are and how we can improve our services for them."

Once maintenance is completed Pooja analyses the job report and contacts the customer directly to get feedback on the work done and overall performance of Al Shirawi. She also notifies customers when the next maintenance on their air conditioning system is due.

So far the customer feedback has been predominantly good, according to Pooja, however it hasn't all been positive.
"No-one's perfect, although we are striving to be," Pooja said.
As part of the dedication to customer service, all technicians now undergo a new training programme, given by supervisors, to teach them how to better deal with such things as maintenance work, technical details and interaction with customers.

Customers who wish to contact Pooja Rangwani at the customer service desk can email her at customercare@alshirawi.ae or call 04-3338700.
